Borja Martínez-Laredo, new CEO of Carbures

• Carbures’ Board of Directors has appointed Borja Martínez-Laredo, to date Director of UBS Spain, the new Company’s CEO with the aim to lead the Company into a new phase of business development and industrial growth.

• In order to achieve this goal, Martínez-Laredo has the responsibility of giving Carbures access to the main financial national and international markets, as well as signing strategic alliances with industrial groups who are leaders worldwide, especially in the automotive sector.

Madrid, May 25th, 2017. After closing the Reorganization Plan 2016, which has left the Company perfectly structured, Carbures enters a new stage of business development and industrial growth. This will be done by new CEO, Borja Martínez-Laredo, unanimously elected by the Board of Directors of the Company in order to lead the process of consolidation of Carbures as a reference company in engineering and industrial processes with composites. Martínez-Laredo will support the growth of the Company in two ways: through new access to first-level national and international financial markets, and through searching for alliances with large industrial groups to take together the last step to replace metal into carbon fiber and other composites in different manufacturing processes. With aeronautics already flying high in composite materials, the turn now is for the automotive and civil engineering sectors, where a strong acceleration is expected.

Since its birth in 1999 under another name and as a spin-off of the Chemical Science Department at Universidad de Cádiz, its inorganic growth and global geo-strategic positioning processes, the dessert-crossing that affected the whole secondary market in Spain with Gowex’s fraud, the doubts in the auditor that forced to suspend its being in the stock market until they were solved with a report with no exceptions and the process of internal reorganization that was closed in 2016; Carbures takes off with a more solid industrial reality than ever before. In 2016, Carbures obtained a turnover increase of 10,5 percent to 72 million in its two main lines of activity, Aerospace and Automotive, with positive ebitdas, and halved its losses in one year. Together with Chairman and founder, Rafael Contreras, the previous CEO of the Company, Roberto Rey, current member of the management board, left a clean and orderly business structure, which is the perfect platform to face the new maturity stage of Carbures. Therefore, 2017 marks the beginning of another era for the Company.

Executive with huge confidence from financial markets
To lead this new stage, the Board of Directors has unanimously elected Martinez-Laredo as new CEO, an executive with huge confidence from financial markets, which he perfectly knows. Having regained the trust of banks, with newly opened credit lines, new CEO and former director of UBS in Spain faces the challenge of giving the Company access to new capital markets at the highest level, both national and international. Martínez-Laredo has a degree in Economics and Business Administration from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, an Executive MBA from the Business School (IE) and the General Management Program (GMP) from IESE Business School. Martínez-Laredo sums more than twenty years of experience in the financial and business sectors. Aside from being director of UBS, throughout his professional career, Martínez-Laredo has worked as Director of Large Assets and Institutions in Capital at Work, a wealth management company now called Value Tree, and as Director of CCS (a company linked to the management of health material). In 2015, he was selected by UBS Key Talent and, in 2016, member of the Circle of Excellence, awarded by the Swiss bank to the top performers worldwide.

Carbures’s new CEO stands out for his broad knowledge of financial markets and, in this sense, he is the perfect complement for the Company's Chairman and Founder, Rafael Contreras, who knows very well the business world and the trend of different sectors towards the use of composites. The appointment of Martínez-Laredo and his work together with Contreras will be a twist in the reinforcement of the management team of the Company.

Alliances with large industrial groups to change the metal into fiber in cars
The second responsibility that the Board of Directors has entrusted to the new CEO is to manage strategic alliances or work agreements with large industrial groups, especially in the automotive sector, as the vehicle to drive the great industrial revolution of metal into carbon fiber. That process has already begun. As a Tier2, Carbures is moving forward with a growing production of pieces for leading manufacturers and Tier1 companies in the sector. Still awaiting for the final push, which will allow the lightening of cars’ weight by replacing the metal parts into carbon fiber ones and the assemble of more efficient engines, with the ultimate goal of launching less polluting or non-polluting cars, with electric or hydrogen engines… These strategic alliances will allow Carbures to become a global benchmark in the industrial processes of manufacture in composites and a reference for Tier 2 not only in the aeronautics sector, where it is already solid, but also in the automotive sector, where the change has just begun.

Borja Martínez-Laredo and Rafael Contreras form a solid executive management team thanks to the way they complement each other, combining the industrial and technological experience of one with the financial profile of the other. "Martínez-Laredo is a top-level executive who has a lot to offer to the Company, who represents a management guarantee in the first-order financial world, among large industrial groups, both Spanish and international, and which will allow us to make a qualitative leap as a reference company in engineering and manufacturing processes with composites", says Contreras.
In his presentation, Martínez-Laredo thanked for his appointment as new CEO "both Chairman Rafael Contreras and the Board of Directors of the Company". He added that "Carbures has proven to be a company with a real industry and business reality with a great past, but with an even better future”. Martínez-Laredo concluded: “I will do everything I can to boost the growth of this Company and to reinforce its position as a leader in manufacturing processes in composites."
Martínez-Laredo’s presentation was carried out in the framework of Carbures’s International Carbures, where the Company reviews the previous year and reinforces the guidelines for the next year.
